CPA Cheque Compliance Deadline Extension

The CPA has extended the deadline for compliance to June 30, 2007.

This is good news, especially since the CPA (Canadian Bank's policy body) have done nothing to communicate this compliance issue to the general public or Canadian businesses!

CPA areas of interest & holograms

Please note that the CPA is considering how to handle holograms. There is some rumblings that the high tech security feature will be ruled unacceptable.

Data - CCG guarantees our cheques to be fully functional. If this security feature is not allowed, we will re-run any cheques which have holograms that we have produced leading up to a final ruling from the CPA. Hopefully, the CPA will get their act together on these issues ... January, 2007 is fast approaching!

Price Escalations Announced by Mills - April 2006

This letter is to advise you that in the coming few weeks, DATA will need to increase prices on some of our printed products because of further substantial increases in our cost for paper from the mills.

Prices have already increased several times in the past year or so, as I am sure you are aware, and we want to review the evolving market conditions underlying the present situation.

Production costs for the paper companies have risen, largely because of energy prices. At the same time, their economic prospects have deteriorated rapidly because of the large rise in the value of the Canadian dollar against international currencies. As a result, a number of Canadian paper mills have become uncompetitive fairly suddenly, and are shutting down. The reductions in local supply are increasing domestic demand, forcing up paper commodity prices.

Price increases are never welcome. If there is good news, it is that DATA is working hard and successfully to protect our place in the paper supply chain on your behalf. We have always made loyalty and professionalism high priorities in our relationships with our own suppliers, staying loyal at those times when markets have been soft, and one time bargains have been available. Now, under the present conditions, in which a market seeking a new status quo is creating instability, we continue to be able to acquire reliable supplies of paper, albeit at increased cost.

And we commit to you that we will continue to do our utmost to negotiate reductions in the increases as they are presented by the mills. In fact, over the past two years we have absorbed all or parts of several increases by an aggressive search for new efficiencies and savings opportunities within our own operations.

We will pass along news of the coming increase as soon as we have the information. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this volatile period, and urge you to contact us with any questions you have about this subject.

Sincerely,

John Harvey

We Are All Getting Robbed!!

This is disgraceful ... the article below is lifted directly off the CBC web site.

The federal Competition Bureau hit three paper companies with record fines on Monday after they pleaded guilty to conspiracy in the carbonless sheets market. Cascades Fine Papers Group Inc., Domtar Inc. and Unisources Canada Inc. all pleaded guilty in Ontario Superior Court in Toronto to two counts of conspiring to lessen competition.

The firms were each fined the maximum $10 million for their activities in Ontario – the first time the court has imposed such a penalty for domestic conspiracy. The previous largest fine on a similar charge was $2.5 million. The companies were also fined $2.5 million each for their activities in Quebec. Domtar said it pleaded guilty to avoid potentially lengthy and costly litigation. Domtar doesn't make carbonless paper; it buys the paper and resells it.

Carbonless sheets are used by commercial printers in the making of forms and receipts. The Competition Bureau said its investigation, which began in 2002, found the three companies conspired to avoid competing with each other in the carbonless sheets markets in Ontario between October 1999 and September 2000, and in Quebec during 2000. According to the federal bureau, the three companies' activities included: sharing sales and pricing data maintaining prices to avoid a price war introducing common price discount programs co-ordinating a response to a new market competitor Several unnamed personnel at the companies were also removed from their positions for their involvement in the conspiracy.

Power Tip ... Gmail as Archive & Spam filter!

I use my G-Mail account to archive all of my incoming e-mail messages plus I filter out spam via G-Mail so many of these annoying SPAM messages never reach Outlook on my desktop.

The trick is to route e-mails through G-Mail before they get sent to your desk top e-mail client (MS Outlook, Eudora, etc.). FYI, I have never had to retrieve a legit message from G-Mail's Spam message folder! Also, if a message is getting through Gmail, filter out that specific sender address in Gmail's settings ... it works like a charm!

I have a few Gmail invites left ... send me a message and I will send you an invite, if needed.

John Harvey
